Founded over 120 years ago by Gottlieb Suhner, Brugg Cables has grown to be one of the world’s leading cable system suppliers/manufacturers. It is our strong customer orientation and the expertise of our employees that continue to set us apart as a company. We focus on innovation and outstanding Swiss quality – and have done so since 1896.

Brugg Cables is part of the Italian Terna Group. Thanks to this merger, we are part of this leading European group of transmission system operators. Our mission is to play a key role in the energy transition by providing energy infrastructure with power cable systems.

Gottlieb Suhner opens a cable factory in Brugg with 16 employees.

1908

The company becomes a joint-stock company under the name Kabelwerke Brugg AG.

1920

Brugg’s first in-house high-voltage laboratory is built.

1934

Production of first 150 kV oil cable.

1947

Area of about 10,000 m² purchased from the Brugg municipal authorities. This became the site of the new factory of today’s Brugg Cables, comprising various machine rooms.

1954

First PVC-insulated low-voltage cables manufactured.

1955

Production of first 20 kV plastic high-voltage cable.

1969

Largest underground cable storage facility in Europe built, with a capacity of more than 2800 drums; sealing ends for SF6 cables developed.

1980

Dry cross-linking plant commissioned for the manufacture of high-voltage cables up to 60 kV.

1981

Cross-linked plastics introduced for ultra-high voltage cables, now up to 500 kV.

1989

Kabelwerke Brugg AG Holding established.

2011

Brugg Kabel AG hives off its industrial area to create Brugg Cables Industry AG.

2011

Brugg India established.

2013

Plant expanded from 32 to 50-tonne cable drums.

2013

High-voltage test laboratory in Faraday cage opened.

2014

Cooperation with partners in India, Mexico and Saudi Arabia.

2015

Capital investments in DESMA production facilities in Suzhou plant, China.

2016

Brugg Cables, which had been part of the Brugg Group until 2020, was the second largest division of the Group.

Brugg Kabel AG has a New Parent – Terna S.p.A. an Ideal Strategic Partner

To complete the integration process of Brugg Kabel into the Terna Group, three separate legal entities with focus on different tasks were created: Brugg Kabel AG, Brugg Kabel Manufacturing AG and Brugg Kabel Services AG.
